You've mentioned concerns about having Donald Trump at the helm at this time in history, given his lack of intelligence concerning foreign policy. (Actually, his lack of intelligence in general.) I hadn't considered the Thucydides Trap in light of America's decline under Trump, and China's rising influence. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Scary thought.

As a refugee 70 years ago, a naturalized citizen more than 50 years, a political science and history major over 50 years ago, a former federal employee over 30 years, who took the same oath as the president, the vice president, every member of Congress and the military and the Cabinet and the entire federal workforce, all I feel is anger and rare sadness at every single person who has broken that oath, not in private, but in public view. I will celebrate the people who founded the US, will watch 1776 again (if you haven't seen it, you should - it's not shy about some very sad, bad truths). I know they're crying at what their successors have done to the country they fought and died for.
Maybe Trump is building his own "Eagle's Nest" as Hitler did near the end of the war. A multi functional ballroom with 4" thick windows? When I look at what he says, I think of Putin's reaction to the collapse of the USSR. In that sense, Xi is right, the US is dangerous and has many nukes that a desperate man might use. So does Putin. The very fact that the Chinese are now supplying middle eastern countries on the other side of the Straits with weapons is a real sea change.
As much as I enjoy your writing Charlie, I look forward to your dog pics equally. Being a dog lover is on my list of reasons to read a journalist's work!
Have you seen any of the photos from the meetings in China? It's interesting that the American delegation was all white men, no females , no black or brown folk. I guess this is Trump's real world and how he thinks the country should be, all white!
Must have been an off day for Xi not to mention that America is now in the ascenence since Joe Biden brought it all down. I'm sure it was an oversight. Looking at the Mellon auditorium it is amazing - what a great space! I'm sure Taiwan is super worried at this point because I just cant see Trump offering any protection. I'm also not sure how much the trilateral coalition is capable of if America sides with China.
