Happy Thursday! Election Day on 2024! I found myself bored out of my mind! Regular Media was boring! I have learned a lot from substack! Independent Media is where it’s at! I listen to Dr. Heather Cox Richardson on YouTube! Definitely take a listen! It seems to make sense! Perhaps someone needs to have an interview with her! Like you she is full of wisdom and knowledge and understanding! Again Mr. Sykes happy Thursday!

It's not just the voters who said 'yes this is what we want'. It is all the other voters who didn't turn out to vote that DIDN'T say 'no this is NOT what we want. There is a lot to be said for compulsory voting, and part of it is that the government HAS to ensure that everyone has the ability to vote - your new problem.

Trump may be able to shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and not lose any supporters, but his supporters will scream bloody murder when they finally wake up and realize that their pockets have been picked by “dear leader”.

You nailed it. And our failure of imagination still makes it hard to grasp the magnitude of it all.

If only we had been warned more.....

This refresher, at a time a lot of us are realizing we have to be able to talk with Trump voters who may be finally seeing this, challenges us maintain the tone of respect necessary for a productive discussion. We have to convert contempt into something more useful, maybe a mix of pity, hope, and patience. My strategy is to listen, prompt for more, listen again, ask gentle questions, listen, politely ask for credible evidence, wait and listen. Part amicably. I hope it works.

You were incredibly prescient... but you missed the actual severity by an order of magnitude. I'm glad we didn't know how bad it would be, or I may have lost faith in the citizenry.

Charlie's predictions one year ago were right on target.

Sometimes it’s sad to be right. We all must muddle through together.

My first year subscription to To the Contrary is due for renewal in a few days. I don’t remember perfectly, but his post 2024 election thoughts were likely a prime motivation for subscribing. I follow Charlie because he a knowledgeable realist.

You hit the nail on the head a year ago. That’s why I’m a big fan of yours. I am optimistic that the tide is turning and will continue to follow you for news, opinions and most importantly, dog pics.

I knew it was going to be bad, but it ended up being worse than I predicted.

Beautiful Zok. And too bad you had such clear vision of Trump’s madness and cruelty. Wish you had been wrong there.
