Pelley did exactly what we had wished the "adults in the room" around Trump in his first term had done. Not leave quietly and keep their mouths shut for years (until their books came out or until he ran for office again and they felt compelled to murmur some objections) but speak out to warn Americans clearly about the danger Trump represented. Expressing concerns in private is what got us here.

"The possibility of treason by a close associate has been a nightmare of most dictators throughout history. Better informed viziers are also better able to discriminate among potential plotters, and this makes them more risky subordinates for the dictator. To avoid this, dictators, especially those which are weak and vulnerable, sacrifice the competence of their agents, hiring mediocre but loyal subordinates." (Egorov & Sonin, Institute for Advanced Studies)

Late stage authoritarians get predictably paranoid (as do narcissistic grifters with obvious signs of dementia, apparently), hence the devolution to further and further incompetence. Stalin’s Red Army purge was the extreme example (though not quite late stage) and post-1943 Mussolini is a prime one. Trump's picks are becoming decreasingly professional, increasingly hacks (see Todd Blanche as another specimen), and the bar was already on the ground. If it's possible to get any worse I'm sure it will. We still have two and a half years of this bullshit. God save us.
