Mr. Graham Platner advocates the inclusion of men in women’s sports; if these men declare themselves to be women. He fondly recounts his experience wrestling girls in high school and thinks it was not a big deal. On the subject of men in women’s sports he says “I’m sorry — I cannot take it seriously.”
On the other hand, Senator Susan Collins supports keeping men out of women’s sports. Senator Collins does not have a record of abusive behavior and carrying Nazi tattoos and does seem to be a decent person at heart.
Of course, I wish she were a stronger opponent to President Trump, but she still has the moral high ground against this Democratic candidate.
Democrats, I think you are going to fail again because of they/them.
The smart thing and the right thing are the same thing. Platner would weigh down the party enough to cost seats in other closely-contested states, like Texas where I’m from. In more ways than one, Platner as Dems’ nominee for Senate from Maine would make it harder for Talarico to beat Paxton here. On a national level, Platner largely defuses the effectiveness of Dems’ powerful message about Trump’s misogyny, which can sway a lot of suburban women voters.
Since Platner has long known the content of his own freshly-unpacked baggage and since he pretty clearly lied about not knowing the meaning of his tattoo, it was selfish, arrogant bad judgment for Platner to have run in the first place. I’m all for forgiveness and redemption, for those who are truly contrite, but the Senate is not a 12-step program. It’s not too late for him to drop out. Platner’s not the only Dem who can beat Collins. He should do the right thing—which is also the smart thing—and drop out. Even if he drops out after the primary, the Dems can replace him with a more sensible choice who can easily unseat Collins.

The thing is, the ex-girlfriend has text messages proving that Platner KNEW the meaning of his Nazi tattoo years ago. So his story that he only recently learned the meaning of that tattoo was a lie. CNN and the NYTimes have seen those texts messages. He kept the tattoo for years after he knew what it was. And then he lied about what he knew.
Platner’s misogynistic and anti-semitic texts are a matter of public record. His recent sexting on a platform known as a site used by pedophiles is also a matter of public record. We still don’t know who he sexted with or what he sent in those messages—because he won’t release those messages.
Defending Planter because he’s “our” jerkwad is a dubious position for a party that claims to occupy the moral high ground and is also foolish as a matter of practical politics because Dems could nominate any number of other candidates who would easily defeat Collins.
Sorry, I can’t listen to any more people talking about reporting on Platner. Have him on add ask him the questions so we can all hear his answers instead of everyone gossiping about their opinions and speculations. None of it is helpful.
