“We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately”. — Benjamin Franklin, whose hoary advice seems especially relevant these days.
Lusty Spring crept upon us this week as we slogged through yet another burst of retribution, lawlessness, and a variety of words that begin with the letter f——.
Trump silenced the voice of America, killed the Department of Education, defied the judiciary, truckled to Putin, threatened his opponents, insulted our allies, and flaunted his cruelty and corruption, while timorous universities and law firms shrank from principle. (An entire generation of politicians, executives, lawyers and academics can now be described by our Word of the Day: “pusillanimous”.)
Meanwhile, co-president Musk continued to chainsaw his way through the government. And, really, what could go wrong?
Bloomberg: Social Security Says DOGE Ruling Could Force Agency to Shut Down
MSNBC: Social Security recipients face a brutal combination: New requirements and fewer offices
Wapo: Tax revenue could drop by 10 percent amid turmoil at IRS
And we are only at Day 61 of this reckless ride through history.
Happy Saturday.

A quick note about this newsletter.
First: Thank you for subscribing. Even though we launched the podcast only a month ago, the “To the Contrary” newsletter had more than 2.3 million views in the last 30 days and is headed toward 70,000 subscribers.
But this is not a business. It’s a mission. And we are not in competition with anyone — except the voices and forces determined to enshittify the Republic.
By now it should be clear that we cannot count on traditional outlets — including the corporate media — to stand athwart this madness and shout “Stop.”
To the Contrary is a reader-supported publication. There are no investors. No sugar daddies. We’re not affiliated with any PACS. Or parties. Just me. And the dogs.
To receive new posts — including podcasts and videos— please consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. (And I’m immensely grateful for your generous support.)

On Sunday’s “To the Contrary” Podcast, I’m joined by Tom Nichols. At one point, we talked about the new Netflix show, “Zero Day” — which led to his rather impressive Robert DeNiro impersonation.

Flashback: Pete was always the leader on the morning ramble in the woods.
Pusillanimous is a perfect word to describe these people. It has the word “pus” in it. Rather than ethics, courage, a spine, and a conscience, their souls are filled with toxic pus.
This weekend recap of the week's podcasts is great! Makes it very easy to catch up.
Can't wait for Tom Nichols tomorrow!
