So Vance is the attack dog on foreign policy.

Musk is the attack dog domestically.

Trump is trying to keep his hands clean BUT they both work for him & are his mouth pieces. No more, no less‼️

Late in listening, but glued to every word. Great questions and incredibly thoughtful and fulsome responses by someone whose expertise and deep knowledge is so impressive--and important. It is shocking, however, that the country being discussed is ours. The only reaction I am left with is omg.

I hear what you are saying Ann about people being able to read the Signal chat for themselves but we all watched January 6th - for some like myself live as it was happening and yet Trump and other MAGA politicians convinced people it was peaceful and just touring the Capitol. That is the phenomenon that still boggles my mind.

I wonder what would happen if a large number of Republican and Democrat members of Congress decided to declare themselves Independent en masse - and started voting their conscience instead of along party lines.

Excellent. The conversation was so engrossing that it seemed like 15 minutes, not 45.

Yes, Charlie, it’s hard to grasp… But start by focusing less on the obvious political revolution launched from the White House today, And focus more on the financial revolution: the reshaping of access to and control of the $trillions of dollars that the federal government has at hand.

Thanks for this! One corrective: the roots of the modern American civil service system reform began in 1880 with the election of James Garfield, who ran his entire presidential campaign on professionalizing the federal civil service system. He was assassinated five months into his first term.

However, public sentiment for this critical civic reform lingered with the American public during the late 19th century through the “Gilded Age“ that was to follow, until it was revived—as Anne points out in this interview—with presidents like Teddy Roosevelt; and was finally cemented when FDR took over…and the rest is American history… Until now.

Need to have very senior ex-military leaders (former Generals, Chairs of the Joint Chiefs, etc.) come out and call this for what it is : a serious breach of security protocol and confirm what the consequences are under military code. Also if this is a criminal offense and what the penalty is, not just a resignation/termination. I suspect the regime has been using Signal in many other cases - like the deportations, illegal DOGE dismantling of the government, etc. - precisely to avoid the requirements for record retention required of public officials: knowingly, and premeditatedly, covering up their conspiracies to break our laws and trample our constitutional rights. Hopefully judges called to respond to lawsuits on these crises will do serious fact-finding inquiry into these matters and hold the government accountable.

Why hasn’t anyone mentioned that Susie Wiles, Trump’s Chief of Staff, was a participant in this chat. That means Trump had knowledge of this entire situation - here knowledge is his knowledge.

I sure see that the water is boiling. It's so frustrating watching all this happen & seeing legislators - OK I'll say it - the Dems - pretty much just going on with business as usual. Anne Applebaum is an incredible thought leader. It's always a relief to hear her - she's not sugar coating anything or trying to fool herself in order to stay comfortable.

Thanks much for this! Musk and his tech bros are after something that Anne doesn’t cover in her wonderful book Autocracy, Inc. Their version of autocracy requires destroying our current government and implementing something run by tech.

Charlie, you are the very best , and Anne Applebaum ,one of the most respected people I have ever read. How do I get the people that I love and my friends to listen to this exchange between you and Anne. my hope is the that they could listen to this and have a better understanding of what we’re up against. And this is something that we must all confront. Love you keep up the great work, Larry.
