It's been so long since I've heard the phrase "lion of the Senate." That species is now extinct. The last one was probably John McCain. Today, in place of senatorial lions we have 2 new species, "Trump's poodles" (Republicans) and "Deer in headlights" (Democrats). God save us.
That seems like an easy question to answer. There are so many odious politicians because as a group they are self-selected. And self-selected from a subset of exceptionally ambitious people who will do anything to win power. Perhaps you have to be a bit psychopathic even to enter politics, knowing what a snake-pit it is.
So far this whole thing in the LA region is a made for tv and social media event. And this is laying the groundwork for what will happen on June 14th at the birthday party. It's an attempt to intimidate protesters into not exercising their First Amendment right to protest and to assemble in groups.
Fantastic conversation with Brian Klaas. It is scary to think we live in Brave New World when we thought we were looking out for the coming of 1984. We have always been at war with East Asia.
I always love your conversations with Brian Klaas...the only question I wished you had as asked was "If Trump shows up on Saturday wearing even a hint of military regalia, how fu##ed are we?"
...and I highly recommend Brian's Substack. Always fascinating no matter the topic
My god. How glad I am that I have a more sophisticated mind than maga and other assorted sheep. I hate reality shows. I hate social media. Except substack of course. Not saying I’m brilliant but damn. JUST GRATEFUL.
On the federal level, the problem is money. There used to be no (big) money being a congressman or senator. People were either in it for power or to do their civic duty. Now people who make $175k/yr have become multimillionaires while in office. That attracts a different kind of person to the job. Grifters, etc.

And the dogs don't looks particularly interested in "Babylon Berlin." Maybe "Milo and Otis"?

Heard that joke in an Ole and Sven context, and it was pigs! 🤣
