Somehow missed the first episode (just finished the second) - feels like a warm blanket calming me down a bit - thank you Charlie - for returning with brilliant guests so far. Looking forward to more.!!!!!
I am not a podcast listener...I read, so I can reread...so I always appreciate either a transcript or a synopsis as I look to your "take" on issues. That's why I subscribe.
Charlie, thank you, and thanks also to David French. There are many aspects of your conversation that are important for anyone to consider. The limits of the Constitution, the cautious optimism around certain Supreme Court justices, the discussion of the MAGA Christians, etc. (I think Jesus must be sorely disappointed in this movement, but that could just be me.) I am grateful for you.
The behavior of the Trump 2 Administration shows utter contempt for the system of government we used to have. And I see no one in it has any interest in creating a different, let alone better one, beyond having a royal president run it as a person who owns his own business would run it.
In the meantime, nameless, faceless bureaucrats are losing jobs or being threatened with job loss and ruin at the hands of the Administration. Nameless, faceless people are losing and will lose government programs that helped them. No one cares about those nameless, faceless people. Americans will not react unless something happens to them personally or to a family member or maybe a friend. Empathy is dead...it's a weak emotional thing and the only emotion that is important is anger now.
Eli apparently likes coffee, too! I love him even more now!
I guess I don't know what kind of people you're hanging out with, guys. There is NOTHING else that my friends and I are talking about. In fact, what we're asking our Representative and Senators is "Why do we need you? You're not doing your jobs you're ignoring your Article 1 duties. You did not get a "mandate" and your argument about a president winning an election earns them the right to choose his candidates might be fine, but we're wondering why Obama and Biden didn't get that "earned" privilege!" (Yes, this is the exact same scripted answer they gave each of us in response to our calls, our emails, our letters.)
Three branches of government have been whittled down to one and a half. I can't credit the Supreme Court with equal power to the President because they've given him almost unfettered power. I personally resent any money in the budget allocated to pay the House and Senate anymore.
I can go on and on and on about all of the topics and particulars that you wise men have spoken of here, but frankly, all I see are greedy men and women of different proportions, some needing more power and money than others, but still greed. With a healthy healthy whopping of fear. Such patriots are these men and women, particularly on the right. We know they're everywhere in our government, though; the hierarchy and rewards system is set up for just these things.
The question I have: Will the Republicans start peeling away from Trump, or are they truly going to acquiesce with Trump and his ignoring the constitution, the norms and possibly ignore the courts or the SCOTUS? Are they so far gone that they really do not believe in this democratic Republic any longer?
We will need some, if not most, of them to counter Trump, Musk and whomever stands behind what looks like the end of our government. Because, as John Roberts once said, "The Congress makes the laws."
TLO "Are they so far gone that they really do not believe in this democratic Republic any longer?" To answer your question, YES....the republicans had an opportunity to show some spine as repeated unqualified Nominee's were paraded before them and lied over and over again when asked questions about speaking truth to power. They are completely onboard with this complete destruction of our government and placing it into the hands of the Felon and his billionaire buddy. Watch Cassidy, Pounds, Murkowski, Collins, Earnst, all cave under the withering gaze of Trump. They are terrified of the MAGA terrorists he will unleash if they evey look crosseyed like they might say NO!
Welcome back to podcasting! I missed you! Please try to say “fuckwad” often - it always breaks through my anxiety and makes me laugh.
What a duo! Thanks Charlie!

And we didn't fight these communists and nazis; we welcomed them in the door.
Charlie, it's a real pleasure to hear you say, "We'll do this all over again" once more.
