There is a lot Harvard can do. And a lot they are doing. The recent free online courses on how government works (and how to spot fascism) are just the latest tools they have deployed to help fuel the grassroots movement we are all willing to engage in. There may be some dumb, lazy, and misled Americans out there, but this is not who we are as a people.
And the ruthless, vindictive and cruel stance taken by the Trump admin against Harvard (not “creative” as the NYT piece weakly describes it) are a warning and a rallying cry’s to all of us to fight back at all costs. Capitulation is for cowards. Crisis creates opportunity for those braver enough to meet the moment. The NYT isn’t doing that.
Charlie your comments remind me of the Mule, a character from Issac Asimov's "Foundation" Series who used his psychic ability amplified by a "visi-sonor" musical/visual instrument to sow dispair among various populations and conquer them. I see the NYT to be the "visi-sonor" to Trump's psychic ability, lies. Unfortunately we aren't in the novel, so it we don't know how it will end.
Agree completely. It's infuriating-the NYT, WAPO and others are cowards and equivocators. Harvard is now representing all institutions of higher learning in this country and they have the resources to fight. I believe they will prevail. PS The Atlantic is excellent, highly recommend
Are any paid subscribers missing podcast episodes? I am missing the most recent ones and can’t figure out why they are missing from my Substack and podcast app! Thanks!
Thank you for your piece. I've got my NYT subscription on hold exactly because of articles and headlines like this one. I'm getting used to not reading it and then will probably cancel. There is a lot I will miss but I can't take the air of inevitability they have about the current situation.
Thank you for this eyeopener, Charlie. Many of us have abandoned the Times for obvious reasons and wouldn't have seen it.
The first rule of anyone facing a proto-fascist regime is to not throw the fascist any red meat. When the Times offers to throw in the towel *for* Harvard (thanks a lot, chumps), it does the greatest disservice to that ivy league which is acting as a noble symbol for the Resistance.
Someone at Harvard should tell the Times to lay off...that they have plenty of lawyers of their own and don't need their so-called "pundits" to prognosticate Harvard's future.
I wonder if the rumors are true that Trump's hard on for Harvard is all about Barron being rejected for admission there? Supposedly his beef with Columbia is over an aborted real estate deal.
So it wouldn't surprise me if this is just one more settling of a score.
If I’m not mistaken, someone other than the reporters writes the headlines. This one is obviously to draw eyes. And of course, we oppose the message because capitulation to this THIS (beyond words now) is unforgivable.
It is worthwhile knowing what Harvard is battling. It makes me appreciate that despite their wealth and power, this is a bfd. But if anyone has the means to fight, Harvard does. If they raise a white flag it will be demoralizing beyond measure.
As a longtime NYT subscriber, I can weather an irritating headline or piece. They do phenomenal reporting and are still family-owned, I believe.
America needs Harvard to stick around and be on team democracy. Surely they can endure three plus more years of the reign of shit.
Harvard needs to keep fighting that’s for sure I agree!
One thing you forgot to mention, was Trump’s speech at the commencement exercises at West Point where he talked on and on in disgrace talking about “trophy wives” blah, blah blah.
Nothing of wisdom or a message about anything to do with West Point and what these young people did to be able to graduate from West Point
Or what West Point is all about
Just rambling on and on talking about money and material things and “trophy wives” which is a misogynistic disrespectful way to talk about women like they are an object.
Usually narcissistic misogynistic men that have several divorces and several wives will talk about a woman like this .
No understanding about what a real relationship or love and commitment should be about.
Maybe someone should ask Tim Cook about whether it actually pays to try to play. What the hell is the point of paying for a deal that will never be honored by a greedy and impetuous toddler? There is no win in capitulation; we have to have the courage to stand strong together and fight.

Since it’s Memorial Day: US soldiers at Bastogne had no way out. The Nazis had them by the lapels.

The NYT has gone full Nazi. I actually canceled my subscription after almost 40 years. It’s kinda like WAPO lite now.

Eli looks very relaxed.
The Trump Crime Family just keeps rolling along.

Neville Chamberlain would be positively wetting himself seeing this.

You need buddy Eli after this week!
Since you’ve already referenced Star Wars: Andor on your Substack, I’ll offer another rebuttal to the NYT article: One. Way. Out!
Also, rebellions are built on hope!
Harvard needs to keep fighting that’s for sure I agree!

Nice message to those graduates from him.
They deserved better
One might assume that Melania is on the way out?
