Yup, it’s all part of the problem of not understanding the problem :-)

Read: "None Call it Conspiracy" by Gary Allen with Larry Abraham.1971 Copyright. This book was given to me by my mother's friend when I was young. He told me the book predicts the future of the United States. Page 132 describes exactly what is happening now in the United States! Thank you, Charlie Sykes for your substack.

The federal police force was really the key objective of the "beautiful bill." Tax cuts and slashing Medicare were diversions from setting up the police state.

We have arrived at destination autocracy leaning precariously fascist. We may not have fully disembarked at the station, but our luggage (congress) has been off loaded and ready to holiday with prospects of full-time residency. 😳

I agree Mr.Sykes with your analysis, of the problem with autocratic regimes. This current administration want to threaten and bring lawsuits. So they use Fox News, to do this . They really are full of viruses. They threatened, President Obama, nothing will happen. He can defend himself and so can his wife very well. Putin is a thug, and is always interested in money. The regular media on television says, Putin murdered , Navalny. I truly don’t know what really happened?

ALOHA.... “Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought. Instead of fear, let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place. A fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power.”

Why do we think there will be free, fair and meaningful mid-term elections (in 2026)? Trump has every reason to make certain that we do not. His "army of his clones," as described by Gary,"his presidential army" as stated by Charlie, will come in quite handy for him between now and 2026 and beyond. All he needs to do is create an "existential crisis" and then declare martial law.

And as for the Democratic Party (I'm talking the DNC) - yes, I agree with Gary that in 2016 the Democratic Party wanted Donald Trump to be the Republican Party candidate because they believed he could be beat. Fools! And again in 2024, the DNC puts money into campaigns for extremist Republicans under the foolish presumption that the Democratic candidate could beat those extremists. Ridiculous! We need Independents to run for office. The two parties have and continue to fail us.

Gary: "Democracy is as good as our will to defend it." Yes. Therefore, I ask, what to an American does our country mean? May our constitutional republic survive - may our nation have a new birth of freedom.

Does anyone know how much the "Liberalism for the 21st Century" costs? The website does not say, and I do not want to start the registration process without knowing. Getting to Washington DC will be expensive, as will staying there - so knowing the cost of the conference itself is critical. Thanks!

How to Deal with a Bully...a personal story but relevant to Trump Taunting his own Electorate by driving them back to the Dark Ages through Authoritarianism with absolutely no respect for Democracy and through the Taunting of Neighbours and Friends in the Greater World outside the borders of America. All ridiculous for sure, but powered in his insane belief that he is above his own citizens, the law and justice and belief that he has through his own Narcissism a greater perspective and command of all things, when in fact he is ignorant and totally intolerant of the common man and particularly immigrants.

My personal story is the following...I immigrated from England to Canada following WW2 with my family and was taunted by a number of my fellow Grade School students because I came from a different land and had a British accent. The felt compelled to ridicule and threaten me with horrible pranks. One of these kids in particular was on my case from the very beginning and he played hockey on an opponent team in my league.

He was committed to rain terror on the ice...while I was committed to helping my team by scoring goals and defending with all my might. The turning point occurred when we were waiting to enter our respective dressing rooms and he taunted me for the last time, and I had reached my limit with him...so I stood up and hauled the greatest punch of my life...hitting him square in the jaw...he spit out two teeth...and moments later his father barged into my team dressing room to haul me down...and I was prepared to place another fist to his face...before my coach intervened and sent him out with his tail between his legs.

From that moment on I was never taunted by anyone and actually gained respect from all in his clan...and then gained a modicum of respect from him in the years later.

I think the same holds true for Donald Trump...as someone...will take a bold strike to knock him to his knees...and likely not just a single Nation but many Nations are going to knock his teeth out...when they counter his insane Tariffs and his complete Complicity in the Wars of Gaza [by the Isreali Regim] and Ukraine [by the Russian Regine] for his complete betrayal of these GOOD and RESILIENT PEOPLE in those LANDS that just want to LIVE IN PEACE AND HARMONY with the REST OF THE PLANET.

So it's high time to see some TEETH DROP TO THE FLOOR...and I can honestly say I'm not a violent person...I'm just one like millions of the Planet respect our neighbours...respect DEI Initiatives and prefer to live in peace and harmony without resorting to violence.

The violence...if you want to call it that will be more defined by TOTAL RESISTANCE and COUNTER TARRIFS on America...until America is unfortunately brought to it's knees such that they go to the Poling Stations in the Mid-Terms and knock this Imposter...this False Prophet and his Cronies...the HELL OUT OF POWER!! AMERICA DESERVES SO MUCH BETTER...and THERE ARE SO MANY MORE INTELLIGENT, RESPECTFUL and CAPABLE PEOPLE OUT THERE TO GOVERN...so SEEK THEM OUT...SUPPORT THEM...AND VOTE FOR THEM on MASS!! BTW...you can kick his teeth not just down the street but to perhaps a RUSSAN GULAG...OR ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ if it still exists!!

From a Canadian who knows how to treat BULLIES!!

The Epstein files seem to have more legs than I originally thought. The important thing to remember is how this will affect the Republican party long term. The longer they defend, the longer it will stick to them. And this is happening before tariffs will have their effect. (before the rubber meets the road)

I append this because I think it is relevant to our national future:

timothy.snyder@yale.edu. Top priority to contact this professor. I am reading two of his latest books, "On Tyranny" (2017) and "On Freedom" (2024). Run, don't walk, to the nearest email book store and read both. They are uncomfortable, but a really good antidote for what ails us in this historical moment. Essentially, we are being had by the .01% elite, whether R or D and mostly corporate/financial entities whose whole purpose is to enslave the rest of us into insignificance.

This is heavy stuff. I have to read them both twice to even begin to understand the principles behind historical before-and-after in this country. We are being smothered by authoritarianism on stilts and the players have all the chips and want to take this country into serfdom. And a party split is being used against the average American waaaay beyond the Epstein files, whatever they are. THIS IS A DISTRACTION. Read Snyder or contact him for input.

I do not grasp everything he says, but he is an historians' historian. The financial/political elites (with a few exceptions) hold their noses closed while they suck all the money from us so they can do what rich people do. Please consider including his works in your calculations about what to do about the state of our country and let's have a discussion about it. Let's make "good trouble" something to think about. It is not just about Trump; he is merely a tool used by those who want to retrograde this country back into what happened in Russia in 1992. God bless America

No! He gave up his chair at a 10th ranking international university Yale, for a 21st ranked one, University of Toronto. Why? Because he didn't feel "intellectually safe?" We are still here doing our part to stop this mess so we will all feel "intellectually safe". Where is he? Not here. Nope, he left. He left. He's been called the Thomas Paine of this era. Thomas Paine stayed and fought, Paine became an advisor to George Washington. Paine understood what was at stake, it's what he wrote about.

I'm sorry he doesn't "feel safe." Neither do the rest of us. Some of us have dual citizenship and have the luxury of choosing to leave. But we won't because it's not right. This is our country and we will fight to keep it and to insure that it is "intellectually safe" for all who live here. We. Will. Fight. To. Keep. It.

You have a point. All I can add is that he is written three books that I know of since 2017 basically on what makes autocracy so dangerous in the Trump regime. I was amazed at how many people voted for him in 2016 and again in 2024. That is the scary part for me; at my age, I am not going anywhere and it looks like the circle is getting smaller... He must realize that the story ends badly for us because his experiences and background seem to indicate that not enough Americans even realize the danger we apparently are in.

My response is that God created us all and loves us in this life too much to let us stay here, since this is not His home, only a place He created for temporary use after Adam and Eve dropped the ball...

I'm not amazed. At the time of the Revolution, 1/3 of the country was for independence, 1/3 was against, and 1/3 didn't give a damn. Nothing has changed. That 1/3 who didn't give a damn only care when it directly affects them.

I have a problem with a oracle of warns of the danger and then leaves when, if you can warn, you can also stay, and with the knowledge, you can stay help protect it from happening. Otherwise? It's just an esoteric exercise having nothing to do with reality. But he is profiting from it.

Without being craven, I suspect that your emotion about Snyder's deserting the ship is overrated. What he wrote, especially in "The Road to Unfreedom" (I am finishing it up tomorrow) is repeated by him again and again to reinforce his theory about how to care for a democracy: it takes hard work and dedication. What more can he do here? It is still worth reading, thinking about and then acting. I am past the emotional stage of human behavior, although I understand your angst. We still have to do our part to make sure our children and our children's children still have a democracy that works.

It's one thing to write, another to act.

What more can he do? He could have stayed here and taken actual, physical, part in the demonstrations. In Germany, in the '30s, there were theologians who were part of the Confessing Church, which stood up to the Nazis, no, we are not there. One of them, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, paid with his life. He was here in the US, he could have stayed here, he didn't need to return to Germany, but he did. Another, Martin Niemöller survived two concentrations camps. They are both remembered for their writings during that time.

If one is going to write and tell others what to do? Practice what you preach.
