That story about the alderman was so sad, I cried..I hope at least some of those who harassed him and/or ostracized him feel awful about contributing to his despair
I'm glad Cheney is pushing back, of course, but we are in a new era of politics where "statements" are meaningless. She may as well be posting it on the bulletin board of the faculty lounge.
She would get a lot more coverage in the media and support from the masses if she made a five second TikTok saying "this motherf*cker is a lying criminal and if you believe him you're a f*cing idiot"
Charlie, just commenting here so maybe you’ll see it. I just saw across my phone (still not watching news except Lawrence O’Donnell’s show) the news of FBI Director Wray resigning so that Patel can be installed. I thought we were “not supposed to obey in advance “! I’m sure you and others I respect know much more than I, but this doesn’t seem like the best response. 😟
Due to the Vacancy Act , some people think it was strategic, David French explained it at the NYT's, and George Conway talked about it on The Bulwark with JVL
Four more years of chaos, confusion, corruption, lies! lies! lies! from the ringleader and the circus members. I thank Liz Cheney, the committee members, all the witnesses. She stood tall, firm, didn’t waiver. I respect that and it’s not over until it’s over.
Just a little kindness and grace, I am really sorry for the Brostoff and anyone in similar circumstances. The dog pics are a real pick me up…My caption: Eli is waiting for either his morning smoothie or coffee.
“months of bullying tied to his identity as a Jew and supporter of Israel”
I am not a public figure but I have experienced it on social media and other internet sites. I have now deactivated my Facebook account, and deleted my Bluesky app from my phone. I am not afraid of the Jew haters but I was spending far too much time tilting at windmills. I want to survive this wave of Jew hating.
Compare Liz Cheney to Joni Ernst, who is doing a slow-motion cave to trump on Pete Hegseth. Cheney puts country over self at the risk of her personal safety. Ernst seems determined to prove the military sometimes makes the mistake of granting honorable discharges to cowards.
Yes, I thought the David French interview was excellent, and his articulate response to the issue convinced me too.
Charlie's comment here today uses a wonderful reductio ad absurdum example to clinch my opinion -- I hope President Biden does not offer blanket pardons:
"So inquiring minds ought to ask: Can you pre-emptively pardon someone for a crime that is non-existent; that they did not commit; and that no one can actually articulate or identify?"
Thank you for the best laugh in a while Charles Sykes. “Bullshit with hair on it”
I needed to laugh today and I thank you for providing just this bit of humor.
I agree with Liz about Orange Crush.
If we had all ever known this Jan 6 charge as well as any other of his trials would drag on and on we would have been banging on Merrick’s door the day after the insurrection. Our system of justice’s treatment of our ex pres. has been such a disappointment and how that nut job got back into the White House.
I hope that we learn from what all Trump has done to us as a society. The first time he insulted a handicapped person or spoke disparagingly about Hispanics the press should have been dismissing the notion that Duck L’orange was a viable candidate… for any public office. Especially the highest in our nation.
The first time a woman said he assaulted her the press should have called out what should have been common knowledge that this man was a criminal.
And the photographed documents on his bathroom was all I needed to see to decide,” Hey, this Jack ass is selling our information to the highest bidder.
He told us who he was. I listened. I wish more people would have believed any one man could be this corrupt.
Several new laws need to be made about allowing a criminal in the Oval Office.
New laws about “no kings…” (Schumer)
No trying to nominate other criminals into office that the president elect probably owes a favor… that kind of thing.
The most important law we need to consider is saying that corporations cannot be donating to political campaigns. Our nation should not be for sale. IE Leon Muskrat…
You are a man of your word. A true wisconsinite. The kind I remember when I grew up there. I disagree with you and then I agree with you. You make me feel healthy and whole again. Thank you Charlie. We all need to reset our moral compass sometimes.
It's too bad he didn't live to see what effect Israel had on Syria. Thanks to the weakening of Russia and Iran they couldn't back up Assad's regime and he had to flee Syria. A small piece of justice for the Syrian people.
Aren't the members of the J6 committee protected by the same Speech and Debate Clause that Jim Jordan and other claim in defying Congressional subpoenas? This seems like a lot of handwaving.
So sad. Richard Haass says he does not think we will have a "civil war" with one side in one color & the other another. He says it is likely to be similar to the Irish Troubles.
I imagine skirmishes with both sides wearing cat-burglar black or camo. But in a whirlwind. There are too many enemies. I hate to say it but sort of like Germany 1930 when it became dangerous simply to be considered different.
Jonathan Brostoff was my alderman and former state representative. And he was a neighbor. Nobody has ever been as committed to his community than Jonathan. Our loss is profound. I don't know that I'll ever forgive those who harassed him in the last year of his life.
Yea for Liz...

Why doesn’t Cheney sue Trump for defaming her?
Just a guess, but, she is a public figure, it is hard to win a case when they are

I do not support preemptive pardons. David French persuaded me on Tim Miller's podcast last Thursday: https://youtu.be/ch9sq7uBLt8?t=1871
Same. If anyone is targeted, start a defense fund. It would become a tangible rallying point for resistance.

The fall of Assad is a miracle. The Russia-Iran-Syria-Hezbollah axis of genocide has been broken.
And it needs to be said that had it not been for Joe Biden's continued support for Ukraine and Israel, this would not have happened.
Complete agreement.
Thank you for sharing this story - I would never know about the Brostoff family except for you and it’s an important story.
