Is it just me, or does anyone else think that these armed, masked men who are abducting people off the streets are there to get the public used to it?
I think we are going to see armed, masked men outside polling places in the 2026 mid-terms. They will show up in mainly Democratic, or minority areas, or in areas with lots of younger voters. They will try to intimidate and frighten voters. They will try to discourage legal voters from voting. They will claim to be ensuring voting security, but voter suppression is the goal.
When you combine the GOP efforts to make it harder to register to vote, harder to vote by mail or do early voting, GOP removal of voters from the voting rolls, states with GOP-controlled legislatures replacing local election officials, and outright voter intimidation, it will not be a free and fair election.
Stalin used to say that it doesn’t matter who votes, it matters who counts the votes. Republicans are working on that part.
And GOP state parties are going to challenge every race they lose and force Democrats to spend millions of dollars in court fighting to defend the results of elections they won.
I think there is a real failure of imagination among Democrats about how far Republicans will go to hold onto power.
I hear a lot of people saying stuff about why don’t Republicans realize how unpopular these policies in this bill are are. They do realize. They just don’t care. The popularity of policies only matters if you intend to allow a free and fair election, and they don’t.
The typical Democratic response to a close election is to try to drive up the turnout of their base voters. The typical Republican response to a close election is to try to suppress turnout of Democratic voters. We are going to see a well coordinated national effort to suppress Democratic voting or to throw out Democratic votes after they are cast. People need to get ready for this.
In 2020, there were a lot of Republicans who, to their credit, refused to go along with Trump’s efforts to steal the election. There will quite literally be ZERO Republicans who will resist Trump’s coup this time. Everyone in the GOP will go along with this. Democrats cannot sleep walk into the next election thinking it will be the least bit normal.
The WV v EPA decision by the Supreme Court was egregious for various reasons including the fact that there was no case or controversy! This decision is a hypothetical, an advisory opinion! The Obama-era Clean Power Plan never, ever took effect bc the Supreme Court blocked it in February 2016. The Biden administration swore to federal judges it was not going to revive the clean power plan but the court said “well something LIKE THAT might happen so we need to just have this on standby.”
