Exhausting to read again that all the Democrats' missteps, mistakes and miscalculations are to blame for the election of a felon, rapist, fraud, tax cheat and failed business man. The choice of a totally unqualified, aging, unstable, narcissistic sociopath indebted to Putin over a highly qualified, accomplished and experienced black woman by the American public says only one thing. Any criminal white man is preferable to an educated black woman.
"there were more capable and more appealing Democrats sitting on the bench..."
Which of those "appealing Democrats" appealed to the Party through its primaries for the nomination as their candidate for President in 2024?
None.
Should Democrats have relied upon "Never Trumpers" to defeat a multi-indicted, civil case convicted, twice-impeached, and Oath breaking insurrectionist in 2024?
Nope.
Harris and Walz did their best; I voted for their ticket...but mainly because I was (and remain) opposed to The Oathbreaking SoB.
However, their campaign was seriously flawed from the start. Biden most probably would not have won the 2024 election but he at least had more legitimacy as a candidate - he was the sitting President, after all - than did they.
Integrity to established process probably means something, after all..
It's time to shake this off and work towards a Democratic retribution - defeating MAGA at the ballot box.
Thanks, Charlie, for the bits of sanity and humor over the past year. You and your buddies (puppies!) always leave a smile on my face, just as your limericks did. :)
I don't know if I'm just tired, fed up, or having "coming to Jesus" moments, but I'm finding a lack of passion/care looking at Washington and the shenanigans and constant noise that comes from there. I work with young teens, and listening to their takes on our leaders is quite comical, and most likely accurate. "All they do in Washington is yell and lie a lot. They're always doing the things that we're not supposed to: blame others and now this new President just puts people down."
Others think that Trump is "bold and rad", but don't understand how he's the President (or going to be.) Still others are really naive and hate the "system", not realizing that Trump truly is what the system is becoming.
How many people look to Washington to determine "what is America?" Should they? Is the bickering and vapid greed really what this country is about? What we want to be known for? I don't have the answer, but it's not what I care about, nor who my friends, family or I am. I feel a lot like these teens I work with about Washington when all is said and done.
My answer is to focus on what is important: myself, family, friends and community and my poor aging dog. I'll stand up when I need to, but this angry, reactionary life we've been living following our politics and dysfunctional government isn't a healthy life. I also don't believe it's who we are as a nation, and hope that we can get away from the media driven ecosystems on both sides . Since it's been this way for many decades, I doubt it will happen in my lifetime, but I hope to see some changes. I'll start with independent journalists who exhibit common sense and are always truth tellers.
I'm not looking to be a "never Trumper". I'm looking for an American patriot to inspire me about what America could be, was created to be, and to be unencumbered by partisanship. To address our current shortcomings and the growing inequality socially and economically, and have common sense solutions. It's very doable if partisan politics and rich corporate interests are not involved. It's also going to take some bravery as well and commitment to education – something incredibly lacking in Washington these days.
I wish for everyone a happy and hopeful new year! Stay engaged but not married to the noise. That's the game plan for "them".
Never Trumpism has never been tried!!! Be patient patriots, Trump and his fellow grifters are starting the process. It’s all about the grift and the hangers-on billionaires and MAGA diehards don’t like how the pie will be split. There is no solution for MAGA right wing greed. Voters who stayed home or voted for the Orange saviour are not going to get lower prices and they are not going to like Trump’s border solution. It’s just a question of when the house of cards starts unraveling. Hopefully before the midterms. The governor races in 2025 should be a good barometer of the real people’s mood. Trump has no idea how to run anything except the grift. Be patient, and when the time is right show these MAGA f-ups who’s in charge. We the People. Forever.
Respectfully, the trouble with Never Trumpism is that it was a political position. But Trump runs a mob family, and has learned how to make his party bend the knee to his leverage, so he can continue to grift through whatever racket he is running on any given day. Look to Elliot Ness for how to get rid of Trump, not to political appeals. Sadly, Merrick Garland fumbled that one true answer.
I disagree completely with James Widgerson's rebuttal insofar as his stating that the Kamala Harris' campaign was a failure. I believe she ran the best campaign she could given the circumstances and got as close as anyone could have to winning. Given more time and more access to the media that the folks in red states listen to, she could have won.
I do agree that democrats need to widen their outreach to people that don't usually have contact with media only viewed by us in blue states. I think until everyone views all available content we will continue to be a divided country. People reside in their own silos, mostly. I know I cannot watch news featuring Trump, or MAGA extremists. Just can't do it. Mostly it's full of lies and directions for our country that will only lead to bad outcomes. So I would imagine that folks that only watch what I can't feel the same as I do about what they watch as it supports their beliefs. I don't know how to fix this, maybe the demise of Fox Entertainment as this issue mostly started what it did.
Once Project 2025 starts taking shape in fact not theory, and Social Security and Medicare and VA benefits start fading, and the grocery prices not only don't go down, but start rising, the working class will remember their roots. It will not be pretty.
We once had a neighbour the US of A
Great friends of Canada we used to say
But along came Trump
Now Canada will dump
Any fucking pretence that we will let that jackass get his way

A few pundits said it was inflation
Some others still argue causation
Voters must have forgot
All the hate, all the rot
Or maybe we're just a dumb nation.
Hahahahah!!!!!

Twas the month before Orange Man, aka Trump
Would be back in the White House, or as he says "the Dump".
His cold heart was stirring and all filled with glee
At the prospect of vengeance and what was to be.
Some, called the MAGA, were prone to agree
But some said here goes our democracy.
A limerick for Charlie, harking back to the 2016 election:
A political guru named Sykes
was Republican, then he said “Yikes!
If Trump is ascendent
I’ll vote Independent
regardless of losing some Likes.”
I will try but not great at this!
With a penis the shape of a shroom
He lived in a golden filled tomb
But along came a lass
With vigor and sass
Who decided to lower the boom

There's a new VP named JD
He claims to be a hillbilly
With silver tongued charm
And eyeliner smarm
His whole schtick's just all pure blarney

There once was a man who was wussy,
He was losing the vote and got pushy,
Then he heard on the news,
That he did in fact lose,
So he grabbed the U.S. by the pussy!
