Charlie, thank you for your hard work and advice of the last 8 years. To all of our shock and amazement, Americans strong voted FOR all of the stuff you listed above and elected a candidate who previously would have been considered unserious and disqualified on any of dozens of reasons. PEOPLE LIKE MORE OF THIS!! And, unlike the '16 election which was a bit of a fluke (win Electoral College but lose popular vote by a lot), This one IS NOT A FLUKE! Trump gained in almost all groups and swept the 7 swing states and made pretty good inroads in some solid blue states. An absolute shocking result. Suffice it to say the America many of us have known for decades is gone, exactly what it will be replaced with in the coming 4 years is unknown. And exactly how much damage Trump can do to our institutions and relationships with allies and our American norms is also unknown, but its likely to be very substantial. WOW. I hope you continue to fight the good fight.

Thanks again.

No, don’t stay! We need you! 😭

No, Charlie should stay there. He has family there so he won’t be lonely. He made a fool of himself over the last few years. Just ask the people of Wisconsin.

RIP United States of America. Charlie, I have enjoyed your writing. We were very wrong about the level of hate of Christian love.

Goodbye democracy 😿It lasted 248 years before half the US population decided it wanted to live under a dictatorship.

Yes, but the Republicans won’t add additional Justices to the Supreme Court. And we will only have 50 states at the end of 2028, sorry DC and Puerto Rico.

"...this is what you get when you treat history as an elective."

In 1932, the Pecora Commission was launched and the people paid attention. They were pissed when it was explained that the national traums of the Great Depression was caused by the greed and mismanagement of the supposedly smart guys in the room. As a result laws were passed to prevent cheap hustlers from speculating with people's life savings.

Nowadays, it seems the voting public is ready to return a cheap hustler and his party to power. Instead of an American public reacting against unfettered greed, it seems the American public is driven by unfettered greed and and an irrational desire for more.

I watched the returns on PBS. I watched as they pushed Capeheart to comment on and highlight the two women of color newly elected to the Senate. I watched the seemingly obligatory segment (celebration) on a trans person's successful election.

Missing out on US history and/or economics applies not to just the MAGA folk who have been duped into believing that Trump is some kind of financial genius. The Dems also need to study up. The flyover states have always been highly suspicious of outsider elites. Eugene Debs and Julius Wayland got the attention rural and working class Midwesterners and turn them against the bankers and industrialists who picked their bones for everything they could. FDR, despite having an elite pedigree, gained the confidence of Midwesterners.

Nowadays, Midwesterners still have a strong suspicion towards elites, but now Dems are included in that pot. There's no FDR to bridge the gap. Biden tried, but he couldn't escape from the focus on squishy Dem identity politics. Kamala tried to and couldn't have done a better job. Problem is, squishy Dems remain a problem.

So now, 4 more years of Trump. Good luck America.

Thank you Charlie for your regular doses of insight, humor, sanity, and canine levity. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading you for the past several years. Enjoy your time in France, and hope you return to an ever-so-slightly-more-normal America. 🇫🇷🇺🇸

It would be laughable if it weren't so serious.

The rest of the world should never have let America get so damn big.

The undemocratic Electoral College must go. My vote is worthless compared to Pennsylvania which is not the way democracy works. It is left over from slave days; shame on us for not getting rid of this after the Civil War.

I swear Charlie you and Zok look so relaxed. Because you obviously voted and you can have any cheese of your choosing and a cognac chaser. I am not normally a drinker but I believe I will be drinking tomorrow one way or another

Fpotus couldn't help barreling into more gibberish and nastiness. Susan Glasser is right about the hate, the slurs, the demonizing, as the attraction for fpotus's mob. Their feelings will not go away soon, but the fpotus has run out of steam. His insults sound stupid. Even some rally goers look tired of his constant, now boring, "weaves". Fpotus has become what bullies fear most, a joke. Who cares about Harris working at a McDonald's? No one. How many hilarious memes out there ridiculing fpotus's garbage truck stunt? Thousands, maybe millions. He is not a powerful figure any more. And no one likes Vance. Fpotus has permanently jumped the shark. Harris is going to win in a landslide. Thank the stars.

Thank you for writing this. It says what I believe should be said, but I lack the eloquence to say myself. Keep saying what you believe should be said, even if it may not always agree with what I believe, because I know that you will give what you are saying more than the proper consideration. There are too many who don’t give any consideration to what they say.

Also keep up with the photos of your dogs. It’s always good to share the joys of your life, and they look like such joys.

In these last days of the Trump campaign I am reminded of Andy Kaufman, the comedian who spent the last years of his life ramping up the craziness. His shtick also included wrestling. Hmmmm. As Neil Postman said years ago, we are entertaining [amusing] ourselves to death. It’s no surprise that the rest of the world sees us as being unserious.

I'm hopeful that we've been punished enough.

The idea of even more of "this," of people who claim that inflation is ruining their lives then voting for Elon's promised 2 years of a busted economy, of an insurrection being ignored, of Trump accusing Harris (or anyone) of being a bad liar...because he's the best liar, I suppose. They didn't want an old & feeble Biden but an old & psychopathic Trump is just fine?!

Deliver us from MAGA, fellow Americans. You're all that's left between sanity and "this."

Priez pour nous, s'il vous plaît
