The United States did reject kings but we forget that the UK Parliament elected in 1774 was very supportive of suppressing the rebellion. Six years later the cost of the rebellion had caused the voters to have second thoughts and the government only managed a six vote majority in that year's parliamentary election. The House of Commons was gerrymandered to an extent never seen in the US (the word hadn't been invented yet) and only property owning members of the Established Church could vote. The defeat at Yorktown caused enough supporters to flip and a new government, led by someone sympathetic to the rebellion, started peace negotiations with the Americans. The King was defeated by the Parliament as much as by the Americans and French.

Highly controlling, abusive persons always create enemies to strengthen their power bases with people who fall prey to their emotional manipulation. They coerce them into hating a targeted group, thus creating a scapegoat for their problems, real or imagined.

Think of what the U.S. is going through as an abusive relationship, and you can spot the abuse power and control. We absolutely check off all of the spokes in the power and control wheel, e.g. financial abuse, tariffs, BBB; coercion and threats, removing “socialism” from California, tar and feather governor Newsom; denying, minimizing, blaming, Biden’s or liberal elites’ fault, etc.

There is so much emotional manipulation inflicted onto the American people on daily basis, all done to divide and conquer. It’s as old as time. We are just getting the full-on authoritarian or narcissistic-abuse version of it instead of the little snippets that regular politicians use to amass power. Appeasement is not the answer; it just makes the abuse and control issues worse over time.

Yesterday’s marches are like the first step in leaving an abusive relationship. We have a long way to go, and we’d be more protective of ourselves if we would not fall for the idea that just because the situation might seem quiet or peaceful for a while, it is better or normal.

Yesterday, Saturday, was a chance of a lifetime in this country to experience that people of all cultures were speaking in one voice to save Democracy. Proud to walk those steps!

Hello Charlie; This is unrelated but very notable. Melissa Hortman was a neighbor of mine when I lived in Brooklyn Park, Mn. I truly feel awful and have felt the need to vent today. I know it is wrong to speculate but we know where the demonization rhetoric is coming from. I don't recognize this country anymore. As always, Thanks for the Dogs! They are our therapy dogs.

This is a somber day for me. Today my husband, gone 20 years, would’ve turned 75. I was considering what to do- just stay home and feel sorry for myself?

But then I remembered a day back in 1970, when we joined protests at UCLA over the US incursion into Cambodia. Here we are in the throes of America being taken over by a despot who thinks the law should consist solely of his whims, and is driving friends and families apart like nothing since the Civil War, planning to make Washington DC look like Red Square or North Korea; I knew I couldn’t be so self-indulgent. To my surprise, my little Tennessee town (population 5100) was holding a protest in our tiny downtown, so I went. I would’ve felt ashamed had I not.

There were about 20 of us. A woman brought her 8 & 9 year old daughters. It was drizzling, and there were 2 sheriff’s cars and a State Trooper about 10 feet away. We held our signs and chanted. The occasional police car drifted by, and the occasional person honked in support. One of our chants was, “This is what democracy looks like”, and that’s the way it felt, too.

The entire Sykes family are true patriots. Great photo of Auggie and Eli. I’d wear it on a tee-shirt.

Our son and DIL are home with us this weekend and we’re leaving shortly for the wedding of our son’s best friend since grade one. There will be many Americans present (including our dear DIL). To be honest, I feel very down today and the stupid parade hasn’t even begun.

But there is still joy in the world and we look forward to celebrating with our dear friends🙏💒❤️
