Charlie,

Your "personal note to Elon" is a national treasure. I propose putting it in the Smithsonian.

Perhaps Trump's golf excursions are therapy for him. So their frequency and duration may be an insight into his frame of mind. Just a thought.

I visited FoxNews.com on Friday to see what they were saying about the financial meltdown occurring (on day 2) - and there was not a word about it.

I couldn't comment at Steve Schmidt's post about the protests nationwide, Charlie, but I wanted to point out the 600 people in Racine, that there was a protest at all in Union Grove, the hundreds in Kenosha, and apparently there were even a few people out in Waterford. It's still cold, as you know, and overly humid, so the cold goes right through one, but the fact is, Wisconsin is standing up and saying "NO!"

My former state of Iowa also had many protests, including in Dubuque and Ames.

I've never been prouder of my Midwestern counterparts than I am now.

Eli is an officer & a gentleman & he is disgusted by the behavior of the Orange Yeti. What would we call someone so spiteful, hateful, & vengeful that he wants to intentionally destroy the best economy in the world? I don't know if this is the definition of crazy, but this is an act of WAR & it is treasonous & I don't think he should be able to continue to be in the WH. I'm sorry that the founders didn't see this coming, but this can't continue. The Republican party MUST step up & stop this madness...with multiple impeachments Trump/Vance/Johnson & stop this madness now.

Take a look at Warren G. Harding's presidency (1921 to when he died of a massive heart attack in 1923). He was corrupt, which people mostly didn't know until he was dead, and he also had a flagrant affair (not as common back then, much less a flagrant one).

No one knows the future, which is both a blessing and a curse. In this case, while I always hope that the powers that be wake up and grow a spine (this means you Rs in Congress!), I do know that protests matter, calls to our Reps (even the Rs, who seem mostly to be useless right now) matter, and that there is always hope somewhere even if we can't find it easily.

In 1974, at the beginning of the year, no one thought Nixon would ever be impeached and forced to resign. Watergate and its coverup were only starting to come into view, as best I can recall from history, and yet, Nixon was out in a relatively quick manner.

I realize back then, our R Senators and Reps had not drank the Kool-aid and were paying attention to whether the country was helped or harmed by their efforts. Still. If they cannot do their jobs now, they should resign and let someone else do them. I know some are scared due to MAGA people threatening them and their families, which is awful and shouldn't be happening. Even so, there is a remedy for them: Resign. Claim that you have family that needs you at home because of XYZ emergency. Then go home, stay there, and let someone do the job you're refusing to do.

Harding wasn't corrupt. He had a little affair. That's not a hanging offense. He was out to lunch, or on camping trips, most of the time. This is what we wanted. A President of Normalcy. I think the Interior Secy was a bit shady with those under-the-table oil leases Out West, but that's no reflection on old Warren G. Honest men from honest families do not expect dishonesty in those around them. Besides, when he took office he freed Eugene V. Debs and invited Debs to come see him in the White House, which Debs was pleased to do. Not the mark of a conniver.

The remains of our soldiers who died in Lithuania were honored by thousands of people as they left the country. When they landed at Dover, Trump couldn't be bothered to attend the dignified transfer. He was golfing with his LIV buddies. Disgusting.

Remember the story about Nero and his fiddle? It’s meant that while Rome burned Nero was ‘fiddling around’ at his country estate about 30 miles from Rome. Today we have our president ‘fiddling around’ at his estate outside of D.C. rather than being in town to take care of the nation’s affairs. (Yes he was in Florida playing golf in his own tournament. Oh, he was being paid a million dollars per player& guests mostly from Saudi Arabia. All to line his pockets.

I just returned from my local small town’s Hands Off protest. It was amazing! I’m guessing about 2,000 enthusiastic, high spirited resisters. The positive response from passing cars was uplifting. Very few negative reactions. An acquaintance who wasn’t there, said “yeah but what does it solve?” That felt irrelevant; it was bonding and inspiring. Just being among like minded people was sustaining; kind of like this forum.

Your description is what I imagine Trump followers feel at his campaign rallies. Joy and elation, inspiration and bonding. More of this bond is required among those opposing Trump if we are to sustain democracy. This emotional palette and painting must be artfully created in order to sustain the vision of the founding fathers. George Washington warned against factionalism in his farewell address. He was correct to be concerned. Here is what he said

"The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual, and sooner or later, the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty."

How is it that the founding father of our country recognized so accurately the threat which we now face? 250 years later. The anger and acrimony, the grievance and belligerence being displayed on social media platforms reflect the very passions which George Washington described. Without an informed and concerned citizenry to protect it, democracy, that delicate and vulnerable social ideal, is threatened with extinction. Along with the rest of us.

Yes, that thought has occurred to me as well; that MAGA rallies have a similar sense of community. I’ve heard reporters say that. The distinction is, those rallies are filled with hate. There tons of hate merch for sale at MAGA rallies. There’s a meanness that permeates. Today’s event in my town was the opposite; so much happiness and good feelings; waving and honking horns, people sharing treats, etc.

So, in your field work for this study, exactly how many "MAGA rallies" did you attend?

(Myself, I've never attended or even seen a "MAGA rally" although they get mentioned in places like this quite often. I smile, sit back and wait for the luxuriant story. Like when people tell you how they were abducted by aliens who gave them anal probes.)
