I think that what a lot of people on our side fail to understand about these Trump supporting Christians is that their Christianity isn't spiritual, studying the words of Jesus and trying to live them in their own lives. It's cultural. The cross is a cultural marker saying that you belong to the culturally conservative in-group, and a weapon to bludgeon those who don't belong. The most important things are the exclusion of us "sinners": gay people, "childless cat ladies", and other outsiders. That's why they hate Pope Francis (but, let's be honest, Catholics will be next on their list once the atheists and Jews are taken care of).

The idiotic War on Christmas crap was going on waaaaaay before Trump.

Their patriotism works the same way. Shallow, performative, and the flag as a weapon to use against others, rather than a welcoming symbol of unity.

I've been a never Trumper since he screwed my brother-in-law's contracting business well before he entered politics. But the continued support among Christians for Trump has really made me question my faith.
