On 5/17/25, the Atlantic’s David Frum was the guest on the “To the Contrary” Podcast.
I'm a subscriber and I enjoy ad-free podcasts using Podcast Addict. Although I found this episode on the non-subscriber feed (with commercials) this particular episode has NOT posted to my subscription feed. I am concerned there's a disruption in the ad-free feed. Could you please look into it and resolve the issue?
FYI: I have been listening to you since your early podcasts on the Bulwark. I became an early subscriber to the Bulwark because of your daily podcasts. I was sad when you decided to step back and I missed you, so I'm very glad you have returned, and are recording many shows per week. David Frum is one of my favorite commentators (and I like his weekly podcast, too.)
"Why it matters: The audio from two hours-long sessions appear to validate Hur's assertion that jurors in a trial likely would have viewed Biden as "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."
Yes by all means lets spend reams of newsprint and pages of internet stories, rehashing and reanalyzing Biden and in doing so push aside, obfuscate and ignore what is going on now. That our president is openly accepting bribes from foreign countries, that Stephen Miller is the one making military attack decisions, that Mike Johnson thinks its great trump is so transparent about his corruption. Biden is history and it may be interesting but in the context of things, it simply does not matter.
"And, again, it appears to reflect real concern on the part of the justices in the majority that the dissenting justices seem so un-troubled by how events appeared to be transpiring back in April."
Roberts can no longer pretend that Alito and Thomas have any interest whatsoever in upholding the constitution.
Bad timing for this new look at Biden and the Biden Whitehouse.. but.. if the Democrats don’t do it at some point it will make it harder to press the republicans to do the same as Trump descends into madness.
Face it republicans have no interest in as you say looking at the trump white house. They are relieved that so far the court has stopped the worst oh his actions, but for how much longer. He is gearing up to try and suspend Habeas Corpus, and congress is going to have to weigh in on that one way or the other.
I always learn so much from David Frum… thank you so much for having him on again! The plane story is hilarious. Boy did 47 get played—now: will WE get played by letting him rebuild the thing for a billion+ dollars? As Sarah Palin would say, youbetcrha! And Frum’s breakdown of tariffs was a real eye-popper. They’re worse than I thought… it is becoming harder each day to envision us collectively.waking up to the slow-moving catastrophe we created. God help us.
Trump’s Big Mad post at the end sounds psychotically paranoid. How the media & press aren’t up in arms and publishing multiple articles daily about Trump’s compromised mental status, from his delusions to his answers and comments that make no sense, is beyond me.
One of my dear, departed cocker spaniels had a storm routine of leaping onto the bed to warn us and then heading for the walk-in shower. Who says we're the bright ones?
Just consider the profound tragedy that one mentally ill, supremely thin-skinned manchild who can never admit being beaten will take the USA down to soothe his ego.
Trump's rants are exactly why his niece, Mary Trump, labels him a psychopath. Where are the persons who realize the clear and present danger to our democracy. Where are the persons who attempted to reason with Trump in his first administration. If this continues we may be looking a coup de etat. Non, je regret rein.
My thoughts are as follows after much self curiosity of the reverse, my own biases, the normal scope and jurisdiction for a special counsel submitting a final report under 28 C.F.R. 600.8(c), I believe that's the correct statute but not certain:
1. Am I correct to say that Mr. Hur resigned after his report was given to Garland or sometime shortly after?
2. It is not stated, any where in Hur's Executive Summary or otherwise, including the report itself, that Garland gave Hur any additional jurisdiction, to exceed normal investigative boundaries, in investigating this matter. Were there any?
3. If Hur wanted to comment on his theories of a future trial, possible future jury trial, possible jurists interpretations, possible judicial inclusions or exclusions of evidence and other submissions allowed or disallowed by a judge, specific jury instructions, a medical condition for Biden in the context of the report and of a future hypothetical jury interpretation of said medical condition at a trial, after he stated he found no reason to recommend prosecution, based on the jurisdiction he had, which appear to be only the documents themselves, would his hypothetical future predictions, for anyones mens rea, associated with the current investigation warrant a special jurisdiction or permission to do so?
I say this as to his comments on Trump's handling, being obstructive, of his own investigation, as a jurisdiction issue as well. Was he intended to compare the two, comment on the differences between the two, the similarities? Would those require approval of additional jurisdiction for his investigation and final report?
I ask these things for a very serious reason. I had these questions long before any Tapper book, debate debacle, and so I'm still interested in understanding why Special Counsel Hur became, Seer Hur or Doctor Hur, as without the additional permission of additional jurisdiction he was way out of scope in providing these hypotheticals and Garland was wrong for allowing them if they were not pre-approved.
Israel/Gaza was a day prior to his interviews with Hur yet that fact was left completely out. I assume it wasn't taken into any hypothetical context or he would have written so in his Executive Summary or actual report with or without permission to do so but somehow I feel intuition and partisanship played a role in this. I'm no conspiracy theorist, know Biden had issues but can't speak to that for this post and I was always taken aback by this.
Please correct anything I have said as that is always my intention to get to the bottom of something that I have newer thoughts on but not back then within the guidelines of the DOJ and their appointments of Special Counsel'd normal procedures.

Thank you, Mr. Sykes.

This matters and must be confronted.

Charlie, I know you want to cover Biden because you want Dems to be introspective and learn from this. You’ve done your part. Please move on.
Awww Eli. It’s ok. It’s not a tornado.

True. I believe Dems need to do it anyway. Independents and centered republicans will take note and remember as republicans do as you are saying.
Will they, I have very little faith in independents, and anyone who still identifies as a republican.
Does the Convicted Felon think Due Process is used to allow migrants to enter our country? He really is a special kind of stupid.
Lord't, just that opening makes me less sad that I spent 23 hours without power and, ergo, limiting time burning my phone battery. Because...WOW!

They are (still) preoccupied with reporting on Biden's mental decline..again and again...
The problem is not to investigate the 'Biden- cover-up' - it should be done, BUT NOT NOW!!
One of the Left-Never-Trump-Coalition's great problems is bad timing!
There is a time for self-reflection and mea-culpa.. and there is a time for opposition !!

Hur's report on the Biden docs, HMMMM.
