AN OPEN LETTER TO MY GLOATING MAGA NEIGHBOR

“Trumpism was never about making America great again. It’s about weaponizing your fear and resentment. Immigrants, women daring to expect control over their own bodies, trans kids, and “wokeness”—these weren’t your enemies until he told you they were. Trumpism isn’t about policy, principles, or progress; it’s a spectacle, a theater of grievance where you gleefully cast yourself as the victim while ignoring the real threats tearing this country apart.”

Charlie is wrong. Biden is merely protecting his son from future persecution by a self proclaimed corrupt DOJ. He needs to pardon EVERYONE.

During the 1990s I lived in South America for four years. THAT'S where I learned about rule of law. Where there's none, or only weak rule of law, two things are guaranteed: 1) Authoritarianism is inevitable and, 2) most people become poor.

America is about to find this out. Trump and his christian nutjob-backers will incite the end of America's experiment in democracy.

But should we be surprised? Can anyone expect better from a country's citizens who love its guns more than its children?

There IS a law in place that can stop Trump from becoming president. It's this: Donald Trump may only be installed as President of the United States if amnesty has been provided to him as an insurrectionist by 2/3 majority vote, as required by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Please go see what Kaitlin Byrd/ GothamGirlBlue has to say.

Trump can still use the Insurrection Act to call out the troops when he wants to call out the troops. He can declare an invasion and dare the courts to disagree. Neither power is as broad as a South Korean president’s power to declare martial law, but they are dangerous to American democracy.

Yes he can try but fucking better not…good writing - Biden still needs to do more pardons!

Eli Pete and Auggie….i would title this picture “Three Wise Men”

I have been taking a much needed break from SM, and spending time with family and discussing how we can support each other in the months to come. I appreciate the summary of recent events.

It seems like the old saying that “those who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat it” should be updated to “those who don’t learn history are bound to idolize and fetishize the worst parts of it”. The whole “MAGA” movement is a desire to return to a time that either didn’t actually exist or was a horrific nightmare for a large part of the population. I am somehow not surprised that there is a faction idolizing the crusades.

Thanks again for the dog pics. Maybe you and your wife could work together on a book featuring your dog pics. “A Shepherds Wisdom” with some of your (and your wife’s) best prose under each one.

Nick Fuentes' battery charge will only increase his standing in the eyes of the sad young men who follow him.

I was rather hoping he'd been outed.

Charlie, There are some people trying to help us see a way out of this. An example: Christopher Caldwell's column in the 11/28 NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/28/opinion/wolfgang-streeck-populism.html. The closing paragraph ends with, "The left must embrace populism, which is merely the name given to the struggle over an alternative to globalism. With globalism collapsing under its own contradictions, all serious politics is now populist in one way or another."

The problem may be bigger than just what is happening in the US.

I’ve been avoiding reading anything Trump lately as it’s too depressing on top of the medical issues I’ve been having and a surgery this Wednesday that I was expecting at least the week before Christmas not a week from the actual doctors appointment. Maybe I’ll feel better after the first of the year and rejoin my commenting again.

Hope all of your health issues get better - it’s tough to be sick during Christmas time. Sending you strength and wish a hopeful, healthy and happy 2025! A prayer for new year with less despair 🥂❤️🥂

It IS despair. We are despairing. Both times Democrats nominated competent, successful, qualified women, and both times the country chose the incompetent, buffoonish, utterly unqualified rapist. I have nothing but despair and anger right now.
