Trump's 'executive order' was nothing more than blackmail. He kidnapped their ability to support clients by baring them from federal buildings, etc. They paid the ransom.
Donald is unpredictable but never surprising. I mean this: who would have predicted that Pete H. would leak war coms via group chat? Not me. But who is surprised once the story broke.
This was great! My two favorite commentators on one podcast. I always look at the Atlantic and Substack first thing in the morning, to see if there's a new piece by them to savor with my morning coffee. Of course seeing Eli and Augie and older photos of Pete is always a plus. I love seeing Lily's appearances too.
A Federal judge dies (Jessica Aber) who was prosecuting Russians and CIA and in media and everywhere else, there is NO push back?? That's not enough to raise alarm????
For Sykes and Nichols, who are having this conversation and seem to be surprised by the idea that's it's good for me but not for thee when it comes to judges, and that's it's a recent phenomena, here is Wilhoit's Law:
"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."
I'm sorry. When was proof provided that ANY of those men are active gang members?
I had higher hopes for the both of you.
The problem is a deep unwillingness to come to terms with a country built on a structure it can no longer sustain - white supremacy. You are going to break your neck, on that tight rope, while helping our dear leader trying to protect that privilege.
AND that is why you are surprised. You will not face the core and the lure of Mr. Trump and therefore shocked and how far the web extends.
Tom Nichols is my favorite guest you have. I used to love to listen to your discussions with him on your former podcast. So glad every time you have him back.
One of the earliest signs that Hitler was headed toward tyranny was his demanding military officers swear an oath of allegiance to him personally as had been the practice under the Kaiser. In other words, it was 𝘯𝘰𝘵 an oath to support and defend the Republic or its Constitution.
Every member of our military services should be reminded - in the strongest terms - that they are not merely free to disregard an illegal order; they are 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥 to refuse to obey it.
I was at Fort Benning during the trial of LT Calley for his responsibility for My Lai. The officers I encountered were deeply ashamed of the dishonor he had brought to the uniform and the officer corps. I can only hope the same sense of honor still prevails.
Charlie, I so appreciate your conversations as they leave me feeling enlightened, albeit lately deeply disturbed about the rapid devolution of our government. I hope Tom Nichols joins you again soon as his insight resonates with so many of us who care about competent leadership and governance. Speaking of expertise, it would be interesting to have a conversation with Tom and Michael Lewis, author of the recently published book, “Who is Government?” I would love to hear their thoughts about discerning expert authority versus positional authority.
A takeaway:
One outstanding pattern is recurring in this administration: the total lack of self-awareness. Does it not occur to the USAG that she herself is an unelected official as she accusingly points her finger at judges? Does Lutnick not hear his description of a fraudster as his boss and himself? Frankly, it takes one to know one and he sounds like an expert, not the kind we need. They dismissed the real experts, civil servants.
These imbeciles may think they are masters of gaslighting the public but we are onto them. Every strength can become a weakness when blinders are on and hubris reigns. Change may not be coming as fast as we’d like but counterforces are gathering.
Keep the faith and take Eli and Auggie for a stroll in your lovely woods. 🐾 🐾
Trump hasn't yet done anything to return gay people to the official second-class status we endured for all of American history until the late 20th and early 21st centuries. I haven't wanted to know what Project 2025's road map is for that. Marriage equality, social security survivor's benefits, military service and protection from discrimination that's driven by what David French would call profoundly held religious beliefs and I call plain old-fashioned religious bigotry are all at risk.

Charlie, LOVE your co-pilot Pup! He knows the way! Not his first time at the Burger Ball!
Enjoy every moment.
Charlie, that making them wait move was also made popular by Guns N’ Roses.
Great reading, eh Big John?
The look on Cornyn's face says it all.
Idk, maybe DeNiro should run actually..

I smile at the naivety of Tom Nichols to believe we're going to have "fair" elections in 2026 and beyond.

Thank you Charlie!
Mutiny!
The Military is supposed to protect the constitution! Why is everyone scared to say it. Their loyalty is to the constitution not the presidency!

Thank you for the reply. I learned something.
